Don studied chemistry at Edinburgh University, Scotland and followed a career in patents first in London, then in Munich, Germany. However, painting and drawing have always fascinated him and he attended many art classes and workshops in Europe. Since retiring to California in 1998, he has been able to devote much more time to the creation of art and is currently engaged in intensive art studies at Santa Rosa Junior College.

He has explored many artistic media but he is currently working mainly with pastels or acrylics. His paintings and drawings embrace many themes, both figurative and abstract and both observation and imagination are sources of inspiration. Landscape, whether painted on location or in the studio has always been a favorite subject.

Don's work has been shown widely in Sonoma County and the Bay Area and many of his paintings and drawings have found a place in private collections, both in Europe and in USA.
